The secretions of the thyroid glands have two basic functions. The enhancement of protein synthesis and the proper using of oxygen are done by these secretions. They in turn play a direct role in influencing the basal metabolic rate or (BMR). Iodine is the main secretion; by the pituitary glands, incidentally and biologically it is a part of the thyroid glands. They are transformed by the glands into thyroid hormones. This vital gland also secretes calcitonin and regulates the calcium in the body. However, a malfunctioning of the gland can create problems; a problem which is visible to the onlooker.

However, there are certain herbs which can be used as an herbal treatment for thyroid gland problems. These herbs are pinellia, sinapis, chenpi, juhong, fritillaria (zhebeimu) and bupleurum. All these herbs are of Chinese origin. They are not prevalent in the western world; however, they have proven their worth in treating thyroid problems. The other crucial herbs for the rectifying of thyroid glands are Edoaria and the other being sparganium. Incidentally they are also of Chinese origin. A problem in the thyroid glands is not life threatening; however, it can cause a lot of discomfort. A small mole can become an ant hill; if the thyroid glands are not functioning properly.
